On Welfare or ODSP? Get The Special Diet

IF YOU ARE ON OW OR ODSP:
YOU MAY BE ABLE TO GET AN EXTRA $250 A MONTH!

IF YOU ARE A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL,
--->PLEASE CLICK HERE

There is a special payment of up to an extra $250 a month available for people and each of their children if a doctor, dietitian, nurse practitioner, or midwife says that you need it. And if you are living on the measly amount that the government gives to OW and ODSP recipients, then you need this money to survive. While this money is available to everyone who gets a letter from a health professional, most people don’t get it because they don’t even know that it exists. Well, now you do. Here is what you have to do to get it.

If you are on welfare and have a good doctor/dietitian/nurse practitioner/midwife, print out and bring them:

Have the doctor/nurse/dietitian write you a letter to your welfare worker indicating that you need special diet money OR fill out this form. This form can be used if you are on welfare to get the special diet prescribed by your doctor. Welfare only requires a doctor to write a prescription note but a lot of doctors want to sign a form instead so you can use this one.

If you are denied, CALL OCAP for back up.

If you are on ODSP, you must bring your doctor/nurse/dietitian an ODSP Special Diet Form. You can get this form by calling your office and asking them to mail it to you, or you can download it here. Then follow the same steps as above, but instead of having your doctor write a letter, have them fill out the form. If you have trouble getting the special diet money, CALL OCAP.

Remember: There are special diets that apply to anyone on welfare or ODSP.

Some of the things you can get funding for are:

  • Organic Diet ($190/month)
  • 3000kcal/day or high protein diet ($150/month)
  • prepared supplements like Ensure
    (4 times/day = $240/month)
  • bottled water ($30/month)
  • vitamin supplements ($40/month)

IMPORTANT: If welfare or ODSP ask you to sign a MEDICAL RELEASE FORM we suggest you NOT sign it and call OCAP. This form allows welfare/odsp to access otherwise confidential information between you and the doctor.
1) They do not need details on medical conditions to issue you the special diet.
2) Allowing them to access this information could result in a change in the way we can get the special diet - and make it even harder to get.

Call OCAP at 416-925-6939 if you get denied or if you want to join the RAISE THE RATES campaign!
